Abstract:
In this talk, we will explore the whole Extended Reality (XR) spectrum, like Mixed Reality (MR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in medicine. In doing so, we will walk along the so-called Reality-Virtuality (RV) continuum, starting with the reality, continuing with a mixed reality until we arrive in a complete immersive virtual reality with no real objects anymore. For all stages we will take a look at existing Head-Mounted Display (HMD) devices and specific medical applications. In this regard, we will see how healthcare professionals, patients, interventions and therapies can be supported by XR HMDs. Examples are VR for pain management and AR for facial surgery. In addition, we will also take a look back at the roots of this field. In fact, the first HMD devices in this area have already been constructed as early as the early 1960s. Furthermore, we will learn about more uncommon terms, like Augmented Virtuality (AV) and Diminishing Reality (DR), and what they mean along the RV continuum, and which scenarios they can cover. In this context, we will go over some state-of-the-art devices, like the Varjo XR-3, that can show real things, like the user’s hands, in VR. Finally, we will discuss the upcoming MR device from Apple, called the Vision Pro. Not released to the public yet, the Vision Pro has some interesting features that can also be applied to the healthcare sector.
