The Institute of Neuropathology, RWTH Aachen University Hospital, examines tissues from patients with diseases of the CNS, PNS and skeletal muscle for diagnostic, research, and teaching purposes. These tissues include the material removed during neurosurgical procedures such as brain tumour surgery. In addition, we examine nerve, muscle and skin biopsies, cerebrospinal fluid and autopsy tissues. We use histological, immunohistochemical, electron microscopical, biochemical, cell biological and molecular genetic methods. These methods are also applied to investigate neurological diseases in animal and cell culture models. Degenerative diseases of the CNS, PNS, and skeletal muscle as well as neuro-regeneration are the major fields of research in the institute. The institute has a special focus on the investigation of diseases of peripheral nerves and skeletal muscle. The director of the institute is heading the German Reference Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases of the German Society of Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy (DGNN). The institute is a member of the German Reference Centre of Diseases of the Central Nervous System (Brain Net), of the German ALS/MND Network, of the German Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy Network (CMT-Net) and of the German Muscular Dystrophy Network (MD-Net).
Sincerely,
Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Weis
