Elective mandatory course Medical Statistics
Many questions in the life sciences can only be answered with the help of statistical methods. This includes the analysis of experimental data or observations, but also the planning and implementation of experiments or studies.
For this reason, valid conclusions can only be drawn from experimental or observational results if suitable statistical methods are used. In this elective mandatory course, statistical methods frequently used in the context of biomedical engineering will be introduced and illustrated by means of real problems. Students learn how to select a suitable method to answer a specific biomedical question and how to implement it using statistical software such as SAS or R. The topics discussed include an overview of different study designs, the development and evaluation of diagnostic tests, statistical testing, and statistical methods for assessing agreement between two methods of measurement. Furthermore, the basic principles of sample size estimation will be explained, as this is an important step in the planning phase of an experiment.
