Junior Professor (W1, tenure track) in Computational systems medicine in high resolution spatial biology

We are inviting applications for a junior professor position in the area of computational systems medicine in high resolution spatial biology, to be filled by January 1, 2025. The appointee is to represent this subject in research and teaching. The professorship should develop new computer-aided and artificial intelligence procedures to enable the integration of multimodal single-cell OMICS and in particular spatial OMICS (proteome, transcriptome) and image data with clinical data and disease processes. The research should focus onto pathomechanisms and the development of new biomarkers as well as the identification of new therapeutic targets. The expansion of a nationally and internationally visible research environment in the field of spatial biology of phase transitions and organ interactions in the organ systems heart, kidney, bone marrow and gastrointestinal tract is expected.
Interdisciplinary scientific co-operation with other departments and clinics of the Medical School, with the Institute of Biomedical Technologies (IBMT) and with other technical disciplines are encouraged. In addition, cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science ans Natural Sciences in the field of Computer Science in research and teaching is mandatory. The participation in the Center for Computational Life Sciences (CCLS) and close cooperation with the Institute for Computational Genomics and the Center for Research on Phase Transitions in Chronic Diseases (CPCE) are desired. The professorship is expected to acquire its own third-party funding and to cooperate with the existing research networks (e.g. SFB TRR 219, SFB 1382, KFO 344, KFO 5011, IRTG 2150, GRK 2375, GRK 2415, GRK 2610, PAK 961, CIOABCD, JARA, IZKF AACHEN, the BMBF networks FibroMap and CureFib). In addition, an active commitment in the new medical student’s curriculum of the Medical Faculty (“Modellstudiengang Medizin Aachen”) is expected. The teaching should strengthen our educational efforts and training in medicine and in the natural sciences with a special focus on computational life sciences.
Candidates should have a university degree and a particular ability to undertake academic work, which is generally demonstrated by an outstanding doctorate. Teaching ability and dedication are essential and the application should include proof of this. Fluent German is not required to start the position but the successful candidate will be expected to hold classes in German within the first 5 years.
