The Joint Research Center for Computational Biomedicine -Scientific Center for Neuropathic pain Aachen- is seeking a

PhD student (f/m/d)

The fulltime position (38,5 hours/week) starts as soon as possible and is funded till 31.10.2026 with the possibility of prolongation. The successful applicant will be encouraged to work towards a doctorate degree.

Tasks

Small fiber neuropathy patients experience pain symptoms ranging from aching to burning pain. The mechanisms for generating this pathology are largely unknown, but altered excitability in peripheral nerve fibers has been detected as a probable cause. Our group has previously developed computational models of peripheral nerve endings. In this Ph.D. project, these models will be further developed to increase the understanding of excitability alterations occurring in small fiber neuropathy patients. We work with cutting-edge research topics with a high potential to positively impact society. We offer excellent conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:

We are looking for a doctoral researcher who will explore and implement in-silico models of excitable membranes of peripheral nerve fibers. 

The researcher will:

  • Develop in-silico models of excitable membranes 
  • Design electrodes for probing the peripheral nerve system
  • Interact with cross-disciplinary experts (e.g. Neuroscientists and Biologists) 

Profile

  • Master’s degree in biophysical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or related fields 
    Strong English (Level C1) skills will be required for the international working environment
  • Strong programming skills in Python and MATLAB
  • Deisirable:
    • Strong Germany (Level B2) skills is a plus
    • Programming skills in NEURON and COMSOL
    • Interest and background in computational neuroscience is desired
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team are essential
